ACC MEDIA RELEASE

EXECUTIVE BOARD UPDATE

The Executive Board of the ACC has met on multiple occasions to evaluate the impact of the COVID- 19 pandemic on the Asia Cup tournament scheduled in September 2020.

From the onset the Board was keen on organising the tournament as per the original schedule. However, travel restrictions, country-specific quarantine requirements, fundamental health risks and social distancing mandates have posed as substantial challenges to the holding of the Asia Cup. Above all, the risks related to health and safety of participating players, support staff, commercial partners, fans and the cricketing community were deemed to be significant.

Accordingly, the Board, after careful consideration of all the above factors, has determined that the Asia Cup 2020 be postponed. Conducting the event in a responsible manner remains the priority of the ACC and the Board is hopeful that the tournament will be held in 2021. The ACC is currently working towards securing June 2021 as a suitable window for the same.

It may also be noted that the hosts for the Asia Cup 2020, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), has exchanged hosting rights for the tournament with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). Through this arrangement, the SLC will now host the rescheduled Asia Cup expected in June 2021 while the PCB will host the Asia Cup 2022.

Please find the SCA guidelines for safe return to playing and practicing cricket during Phase 2 of the post-circuit breaker period approved by SportSG below. Ensure these guidelines are followed strictly.

Cricket matches are not allowed during Phase 2 of the post-circuit breaker period.

We will keep you posted if there are any changes to these directives.

Safe Return to Cricket Plan V1.4_18 Jun 2020

Men’s T20 Asia Cup 2020 Qualifier is scheduled to be held in August 2020 in Malaysia in which following teams will participate

The UAE
Kuwait
Singapore
Hong Kong

Men’s T20 qualifier will be played among above-mentioned teams (finalists of regional tournaments) in a single league format. Team securing maximum points will qualify for Men’s T20 Asia Cup 2020, scheduled for September 2020.

Mr. John Cecil Cooke, one of the longest-serving SCA officials and a former SCA President, passed away in Perth on 13 May 2020. He was 91.

Mr. Cooke played a pivotal role when Singapore became an associate member of the ICC in 1974. He took Singapore cricket to greater heights by successfully organizing inter-club tournaments, tours, inter-state and representative fixtures and made an everlasting effort to encourage the growth of cricket in Singapore.

“Cecil was a passionate cricketer both as a player and as an administrator,’’ said SCA President Mahmood Gaznavi. “He was responsible for prodding numerous youngsters to pursue cricket and many of them went on to form the backbone of the national team for several years.”

“His intense connection with cricket was exemplified by his constant appearances at cricket venues; as a player, a spectator and someone who looked to improve the younger lot of players. He will be sadly missed. He lived well after retiring in Perth, Australia, in the late 1980s, a fulsome life and I’m sure with no regrets.”

SCA extends its condolences to Mr. Cooke’s family and all his loved ones.

Dav Whatmore and the phrase “relegation” don’t quite go together. However, in his third season in charge of Indian state side Kerala, they finished second from last in their Ranji Trophy campaign.

Therefore, it was hardly surprising that he opted against extending his stay with the team when his contract expired in early February this year.

7,500 km away, the Singapore Cricket Association (SCA) sensed an opportunity. They were in the market for a head coach after Bilal Asad left to take charge of neighbours Malaysia. The SCA wasted no time in securing the services of Whatmore, announcing his appointment on an interim basis just a one week after the end of Kerala’s season.

Whatmore’s appointment was regarded as a major coup for one of the world’s fastest-improving cricketing nations.

Our final game against Nepal was abandoned and ensured that we finished first in the table. There were some great individuals performances throughout the tournament from Siddhant Singh who finished as the top run-scorer of the tournament with 153 runs and Anantha Krishna who finished with 8 wickets, who is a joint top wicket-taker of the tournament along with Aftab Hussain from Hong Kong.
