Singapore’s bowlers conceded 324 runs against Kenya in their World Cricket League Division 3 match in Muscat on 16 November 2018 and despite a valiant batting attempt, the Republic went down by a narrow margin of 12 runs.

Electing to bat, Kenya piled on the runs to register the tournament’s highest score in the 50-overs contest, plundering the bulk of the runs against the Republic’s medium-pacers. The African batsmen walloped 33 fours and six sixers to post a formidable target for the Singapore batsmen.

Despite the huge odds, the Republic’s batsmen stood up bravely. Eight of the 11 batsmen ventured into double figures, clubbing 31 fours and four sixes to post 312 all out in 49.3 overs. No.3 batsman Anish Paraam hammered 85 and with Rezza Gaznavi, who made 48, the pair put on 100 runs in 16.4 overs for the third wicket. However, the tall target always posed a formidable challenge and for all their valiant attempts, the batsmen fell short in meeting the target.

The defeat was the second for Singapore in the six-nation WCL Div 3 competition. We lost to Oman in the opener before beating Denmark and Uganda prior to the loss to Kenya.

SKIPPER Chetan Suryawanshi and Manpreet Singh scored half-centuries in Singapore’s 63 run win over Uganda in the World Cricket League Division 3 tournament in Muscat on 15 November 2018.

Put in to bat, Singapore crafted their innings at a slow pace as early wickets were lost. Openers Arjun Mutreja and Aritra Dutta, who made 24, and No.3 Anish Paraam were back in the pavilion for a miserly 36-3. Surywanshi’s 57 and Manpreet’s 59 lifted the score for a decent total of 204 as the Republic’s batsmen struggled to put on a decent partnership with only the fourth-wicket stand of 56 between Rezza Gaznavi and Suryawanshi being worthy of notice.

The defence of that low total was praiseworthy. Opening bowlers Amjad Mahboob and Janak Prakash took two quick wickets each for Uganda to stutter to 21-4. Suryawanshi applied more pressure on the African nation with a wicket without addition to the Ugandan total and at 21-5, Singapore ensured Uganda were very much up against it and they eventually folded for 141. Janak Prakash finished with 3-20, Amjad Mahboob with 2-26 and Anantha Krishna with 2-47.

The victory was the second successive win for the national team in the current WCL. Singapore lost to Oman in the opener before downing Denmark. The win against Uganda was the first for the Republic against Uganda, reversing the previous two losses both in previous WCL Div 3 competitions.

Singapore’s openers gave the Republic the perfect start as our men’s national team defeated Denmark by 94 runs in the World Cricket League Division 3 match in Muscat on 12 Nov 2018.

Put in to bat, openers Aritra Dutta and Arjun Mutreja out on 140 runs in 23.1 overs. Dutta made 87 with nine fours and three sixes while Mutreja contributed 57 with four fours and two sixes

The stage was set for a 300 total but some quick wickets allowed the Republic to total 254 with Rezza Gaznavi making 40 with two sixes.

Denmark’s response rested on opener H. Shah whose 85 held the Danish innings. He was ninth man out, hitting seven fours and two sixes as Denmark folded for 160.

Singapore’s pacer Amjad Mahboob with 3-28 and leg-spinner Anantha Krishna with 4-37 were our main wicket takers. Left-arm spinner Anish Paraam chipped in with two wickets.

Singapore let slip a small window of opportunity to go down by 4 wickets to Oman in their opening World Cricket League Division 3 match in Muscat on 10 November 2018.

Put in to bat, Singapore played cautiously to post 185-9 in their allotted 50 overs. Opener Aritra Dutta top-scored with 38 and middle-order batsmen Anish Paraam and Chetan Suryawanshi also contributed with 33 and 37 respectively.

That modest total meant Singapore had to work very hard to secure a win over the hosts who had defeated Kenya earlier. This Singapore did in the initial stages, reducing Oman to 93-5 in 20.2 overs. But a crucial 59-run stand for the sixth wicket put paid to the Republic’s hopes.

The outcome may have been different had young Janak Prakash not been thwarted in completing his 10 overs. The pacer grabbed 3-16 in his 6 overs but had to forgo his 4-over entitlement with an injury.

The WCL Div 3 comprises 6 teams. Singapore play Denmark on 12 November 2018. Uganda, USA and Kenya are the other contestants.
