Singapore 168 for 6 (Chandramohan 51, Dutta 32, Davey 2-26, Sharif 2-28) beat Scotland 166 for 9 (Munsey 46, MacLeod 44, Coetzer 38, Vijayakumar 3-16, Sidhant 2-27, Mahboob 2-36) by two runs

If anyone thought Singapore’s victory over Zimbabwe last month was a one-off shocker, it wasn’t, as Scotland found out the hard way in the opening match of the men’s T20 World Cup qualifiers. The defending co-champions tripped at the final hurdle on the day in Dubai, unable to score eight off the last over as Singapore captain Amjad Mahboob bowled a sterling 20th to see his side across by two runs defending 168.

Calum MacLeod looked like he was going to take Scotland across the line after sparking a stirring fightback with Tom Sole. Singapore were well ahead of the game with Scotland needing 38 off 19 balls before MacLeod ended the 17th with a six over midwicket and Sole started the 18th sweeping Tim David‘s offspin twice through the gap at square leg and deep midwicket for fours. With 24 needed off 16, Scotland continued to pick off twos at will across the next two overs, only suffering a brief hiccup when Tim David ran out Sole with an athletic stop off his own bowling to end the 18th.

Safyaan Sharif was on strike to start the 20th but Mahboob bowled a dot and a single to start off the frame. MacLeod then just couldn’t get enough power to clear David at deep midwicket, falling for 44. After a two by Sharif took it down to five off two balls, he chipped in the air towards David once again, and the fielder covered 20 yards running left before pulling off a sensational diving catch. It meant Josh Davey was on strike needing four to tie and force a super over or six to win. But he scuffed a slog along the ground to David at deep midwicket for two to end the match.

The pressure had been building earlier in the chase, though, thanks to Selladore Vijayakumar‘s miserly offspin. His spell of 3 for 16 in four overs neutralised the roaring start by George Munsey, who reverse-swept left-arm spinner Vinoth Baskaran at will in the Powerplay for a series of fours and sixes over backward point. But the innings lost momentum after Munsey drove to long-on for 46 and the other batsmen struggled to get going the rest of the way.

Earlier, Singapore’s fighting total came as a result of two contrasting knocks. They had lost two wickets in the first seven balls after being sent in, including the dangerous David for just 1, bowled by Sharif. But Aritra Dutta entered at No. 4 and counter-attacked with a streaky knock, including two top-edged sixes over fine leg, before pulling a third over deep square-leg off a free hit after an Alasdair Evans no-ball.

Dutta’s 32 off 15 balls allowed Surendran Chandramohan to recover from a slow start. Having been 6 off 21 balls, Chandramohan eventually reached his half-century off 53 deliveries to give Singapore a fighting chance. Janak Prakash’s late cameo of 20 off 11 and a key six in the last over by Navin Param during his 13 not out off seven balls ensured Singapore had just enough to defend in the end.

JERSEY 116/4 WON BY 6 WKTS WITH 5 BALLS REMAINING CHASING SINGAPORE’S 112 @ DUBAI INTERNATIONAL STADIUM.

IT WAS A LOW SCORING GAME IN WHICH SINGAPORE’S FIGHTING SPIRIT AND TACTFUL BOWLING STRETCHED JERSEY TO THE FINAL OVER IN THEIR CHASE OF 112 ON BATTING FRIENDLY SURFACE.

SINGAPORE 112 ALL OUT 20 OVERS (Surendran C 21, Navin P 28, Sidhant 30 off 25 and DG Blampied 2-20, AW HAWKINS KAY 2-14 & Sumerauer JTS 3-20.

JERSEY 116/4 (NA Greenwood 46 N.o , BDH Stevens 23 & Selladore Vijayakumar 1-15, TH David 1-26 & Avi Dixit 1-24.

The match allowed both teams to use their full 15 member squads to try out combinations before the commencement of the tournament proper on the 18th of October 2019 where Scotland take on Singapore.

A Ravinderpal Singh-inspired Canada saw off Singapore in the highest scoring game of the day.

Canada 165 for 4 (Singh 79*, Kumar 44, Baskaran 2-27) beat Singapore 164 for 5 (Chandramohan 51, Zafar 1-28) by six wickets @ICC Academy 2, Dubai.

Singapore were fresh from their victory against Canada in the ICC Challenge League A, where they finished top on equal points. Their confidence was high as they had even defeated Zimbabwe in the Singapore Tri- Nation T20I Series and Nepal in the ICC Asia Finals.

Both these sides have been in excellent form leading up to the tournament and are both tipped as dark horses to do well in their respective groups. That was evident here in a quality warm-up game.

Batting first, Singapore lost two early wickets but recovered very well led by a half century by Surendan Chandramohan (51 off 38 balls, 2 sixes) assisted by fine knocks from Aritra Dutta (34 off 28) and Manpreet Singh (36 off 19, 3 sixes) to post a competitive 164 off their 20 overs.

Reversing their recent 50-over result in Malaysia, Canada chased the target down easily with two overs to spare was down to an explosive knock by the world-record holding Ravinderpal Singh (the first cricketer ever to score a T20I century on debut, a feat he accomplished in the Americas qualifier) who blasted 79 off 38 balls including 7 sixes, aided and abetted by 44 off 38 balls by Nitish Kumar.

Group B bowling attacks are going to have to come up with a way of containing Singh, as in this kind of form as he has the potential to cause all heaps of trouble in the coming weeks.

Singapore will be aiming to come back strong in their next warm- up match versus Jersey on Tuesday, 15th October 2019.

Cricket: Singapore teen Jeevan Santhanam to train at prestigious National Cricket Academy in India

https://www.straitstimes.com/sport/cricket-singapore-teen-jeevan-santhanam-to-train-at-prestigious-national-cricket-academy-in?fbclid=IwAR3EBiCvj5URn2FVo_FiU13ag75MOf6bYfNR-GihLFH9OrJ1HNcGmUQU5Lk

SINGAPORE – Singapore cricketer Jeevan Santhanam is only 14 but he has big ambitions in the sport.

According to his father S. Santhanam, the Raffles Institution student is keen to pursue a professional career.

That dream was boosted after he was selected as one of the Republic’s two representatives, along with women’s national team captain Shafina Mahesh, 20, for a month-long training stint at India’s National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

The camp features 58 young players from various Commonwealth nations.

Jeevan, who plays in the local cricket league and represents the Singapore Recreation Club, left for India on Wednesday (Oct 9). He said: “It is a great opportunity to be selected for this training with (this group of) multi-national players.

“I am super excited and looking forward to the experience, to learn new skills and hopefully bring wins for our country.”

S. Santhanam, 44, assistant director in the engineering line, said: “Jeevan has loved cricket from very young, and I think this trip will benefit him a lot.

“He wants to pursue a career in cricket and possibly play county cricket or even in the (professional Twenty20 cricket league) Indian Premier League, depending on the level he and Singapore cricket manage to (rise to) in the future.”

Singapore Cricket Association chief executive Saad Khan Janjua added: “India is a Test-playing nation and their coaches at the national academy are of a very high level.

“Giving Jeevan and Shafina this exposure and the opportunity to learn from different coaches and playing with cricketers from different countries, will help them improve their skills. I am sure they will return with belief and confidence, and will be able to contribute to Singapore cricket.”

Local cricket has celebrated a number of recent highs. In September, the national men’s team scored an upset victory over Zimbabwe at the Instarem Singapore Tri-Nations T20 Series at Balestier Road, the first time Singapore has beaten a Test-playing, International Cricket Council full member country.

Singapore also won SEA Games gold in the T20 in 2017 and will compete at the ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier from Oct 18-Nov 2 in Dubai.

To reach that tournament, world No.21 Singapore had beaten No. 11 Nepal en route to winning the Asian regional final in July.

In Dubai, they will face the likes of Scotland (No. 12), Bermuda (30), the Netherlands (16), Kenya (29), Papua New Guinea (17) and Namibia (20) in the 14-team qualifier.

The top six teams will qualify for the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia next year.
